New RSS Designs In Fiber Tunisian Crochet Pot Holder Set - Orange and Cream - In On Fire For Handmade Finds

This Set of Orange and Cream Tunisian (or Afghan) Tweed Pot Holders hand-crocheted by RSS Designs In Fiber are in the Nov 5th to Nov. 11th On Fire For Handmade Finds !

Anne Hopfer, who does these "Handmade Finds" on her website, "On Fire For Handmade" sometimes does them in certain color combinations and this time she chose the Complimentary Color Combination of "Orange and Blue", which are very well-known complementary colors!

Though I did not have anything made in both Orange and Blue - I did have these Handmade Pot Holders in my Etsy Shop in an Orange Color theme - but this complementary color scheme idea gave me another idea! ----- Though I would usually think that these would fit in an Orange/Yellow/Fall Colors Kitchen theme - they would also fit nicely as a contrasting color in a Blue Kitchen theme - livening it up some!!

Though Tunisian or Afghan Crochet Tweed, which I crocheted the main center part of these Pot Holders with, is a standard-ly done stitch - this exact design - with the Border and Rounded Edge - crocheted in a Chunky Cotton yarn - is my own!

I've been making Pot Holders for my own Kitchen for some years now (LOL)!  So, I've been experimenting some with what I think is the best, most useful design.  For my own use - I rarely hang them up now, so I left the hanging loop off (though if I do a custom order, I can always add them on for someone). 

And I crocheted these with a Chunky Cotton Yarn - making them extra-thick!  This Chunky Cotton Yarn is labelled "Double Worsted" - but in another color theme, if I only have it in regular worsted weight cotton yarn, I can just double up the worsted yarn to get the same thickness! 

And I made these a generous size:  9 3/4 Inches Wide by 8 3/4 Inches High.

Therefore, overall they are very useful for handling hot dishes of all kinds - and they can also serve as a Hot Pad or Trivet on a Table or Counter!

The Photo above and the one below give you a closer look at how these are constructed - Tunisian or Afghan crochet come out a bit thick anyway - in Chunky Yarn, they are really thick - and I like that thickness for picking up Hot Casserole type Dishes out of an oven - or off the top of a stove!

Eco Crochet Cup Cozy in Colorful Yarns By RSS Designs In Fiber

I Crochet and Knit pretty much all the time - people who have been in my apartment have seen all the Handmade items that I have made myself and use in my daily life .... and that is how my newest Handmade Crochet product came to be.

It is called a "Cup Cozy" Red and Green Set of 3 of them in this photo to the left.

But those who I have met in a Starbucks - and the people working at Starbucks, where I go the most often for that cup of Tea (I don't drink Coffee any more) while I am On-The-Go, have seen my Cozy that I carry with me and put on my Hot Cups there - instead of those paper ones they give out that I can't stand.

Here to the right is a Cup Cozy Set of 2 in Blues - and, hey, these go with your Jeans (LOL)!!

They are all crocheted with Cotton Worsted Yarn doubled up - or Double Cotton Worsted Yarn - both of which I have plenty of in Peaches and Cream Colors (new colors - and older discontinued colors that I still have).

These are soft Cotton - they stretch a little bit to fit and "hug" whatever cup size you buy - they actually make it easier to hold the cup and really protect your fingers from the Hot Cup.

I like mine that I carry with me (in a color not yet available in my Etsy Shop) -- works much better and adds a bit of color to that part of life!!

Eco-Friendly for three reasons:

1. Replaces the disposable paper cup cozies given out at most Coffee/Tea Shops - Reducing Waste!
2. Made with Eco-Friendly Non-Toxic Cotton Yarn (I have checked - this particular Cotton Yarn is made with non-toxic colors and that is verified by tested waste-waters at the yarn manufacturers.).
3. Re-usable for a long time!!

I have lots of this Cotton Yarn - I have 2 more Cup Cozy Sets in my Etsy Shop, as shown below - and I can make Custom Orders for people in the Colors of their choice by Request ... h-m-m-m, I think there is an Americana Red, White and Blue Set coming soon!!

Handmade Round Basket - Multi-Colored Dots with Light Blue Accent - By RSS Designs In Fiber

This 8 Inch Diameter Basket that is 4 Inches High would make a nice - and useful - Decor Accent for:

• Bathroom
• Bedroom
• Kitchen
• Dining Room or Table
• Den
• Office

The Main Color is a Variegated or Ombre Yarn with White, Blue, Green, Yellow, Pink and Purple - and I made a Band in Light Blue just below the top rim.

With these Colors and Design - it fits well in a Casual Setting!!

The Basket is 100% Cotton - So it is Washable either by Hand or in a Machine as you would wash any Cotton Knit item:  Cool/Cold Wash ---- I recommend letting it Dry turned upside down over a Bowl to keep its Shape.  -----  These Yarns wash up nice - I know as I have multiple items of my own made with these cotton yarns!!

EARTH DAY IS EVERY DAY -- My Tree Tapestry Pillow

Tree Tapestry Pillow by RSS Designs In Fiber

This week is what is being called "EARTH WEEK" - with Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 being EARTH DAY! And it is the 40th anniversary of EARTH DAY!!

Well, I think Earth Day is a good idea -- if it is a day of celebration and education that results in Every Day being EARTH DAY!!

It is fairly easy for me, as I was brought up with a certain perspective on life about caring for our environment from the time I was a young child -- and I love Nature and what is outdoors, so, for me, whether there is an official Earth Day or not -- Every Day is EARTH DAY!!

As I have said before, Trees are one of my favorite things on Earth -- so to honor the concept of EARTH DAY -- and because I love trees -- I made the above pillow - a TREE TAPESTRY!!

It is in the technique of crochet tapestry or colorwork. I used 100% cotton yarn in Earthy colors - with a sky in a Teal Blue - and, as shown below, the Back of the pillow is done in a textured crochet spike stitch in solid Teal Blue.

Teal Blue is in the Turquoise family of colors -- and I have left a comment on this Home Decor article, Turquoise Inspiration 2, on Design Style Guide Community, showing it off -- as I think it could fit very well in some of the rooms pictured in this article!!

In addition to the subject of my pillow being Earthy, I bought an Eco-Friendly EcoCraft Pillow Form for it!! The fill of the Pillow Form is 100% PLA - a synthetic fiber made from the annually renewable resource - corn!! The cover of the Pillow Form is 100% woven cotton. I was really glad to find such an Eco-Friendly Pillow Form (at my local JoAnn's)!

So, I feel pretty good about this -- both artistically, as the design is totally my own -- and environmentally, as it is really an environmentally friendly product!!
