Knitting Hats Again - and These Are Custom Made-to-Order

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - Get My Handmade in my Bonanza Booth or my Etsy Shop -- or Privately

Ribbed Knit Hat by RSS Designs In Fiber - Shown in Blue and Gray Tweed - Choice of Size and Colors
Handmade Ribbed Knit Hat by RSS Designs In Fiber - Shown in Blue and Gray Tweed - Custom Made-To-Order

I do a lot of Crocheting - but I decided it was time to Knit some Hats again.  Knitted Hats in a Ribbed Knit, like the one above - and the one below - are really nice because of the way they "hug" the head!

They also have a bit more stretch than other knitting patterns,  so they fit different sizes of heads, so you can buy one as a gift and not worry too much if it will exactly fit.

But I decided to do Handmade Hats as Custom Made-To-Order, so the Customer can choose the Size from the Size list, which I have for both of these Knitted Hats. ~~ And, like in the Hat pictured above, I also can offer it in different colors to be paired with the Gray for the Tweed - I am offering that Hat in these color themes:

  • Country Blue - and Heather Gray (shown in photo above)
  • Autumn Red - and Heather Gray
  • Dark Country Blue - and Heather Gray
  • Dark Sage Green - and Heather Gray
It will only take a few days to make - and I will ship it on the next Post Office business day after completing it and sending a picture of it to the Customer.  I always send a picture of the completed Handmade item whenever I do a Custom Order - and ship it as soon as I can!

On the other hand - the Hat pictured below is made in a Yarn that is an Ombre Chunky Yarn of Red, Blue and Tan (what is called a Primitive Americana color theme) and I am offering it in a choice of Sizes - from 20 Inches Around Head to 25 Inches Around Head.

It, too, will take a few days to complete in the size chosen - and then ship.

All my Handmade Hats, Headbands and Scarves are available on Etsy - and you can put in a Custom Request on Etsy, too if you want one in a certain pattern or in different colors or yarns!  Just ask me!!

So, I have lots and lots of experience making them!!

And, so, in addition to the ones I have available for sale in my online shop that carries the Handmade Hats, Headbands and Scarves I make - I can make some for you as a Custom Order!!

Here are a few more pictures - with a linking list of more I have made that are Ready-To-Ship currently in my Etsy Shop:

Hand-Crafted in Fabrics and Fibers For the Holidays

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs on ARTFIRE

People get creative in different ways!  Though I have done "Arts and Crafts" since I was a toddler, there are lots of arts and crafts I have never explored.

I have drawn and stumbled around creating designs in different ways since I was a toddler, but it wasn't until I was a teenager that I really constructed items -- and those were all in FABRICS and FIBERS!

I am not sure in which order I did them - but I did some basic weaving on small, almost toy looms, I crocheted - and I sewed.  I actually made real things!

Woven potholders - scarves - and when I was a teenager and given a sewing machine (a Pfaff, which is 90-something % metal parts and I still own to this day), I made real clothes that could be worn (from patterns - with my own "modifications", of course - LOL).

It never occurred to me, other than in drawing decorations, to make things that could not be used - don't ask me why.

Well - now some 50 years later, I am Crocheting, Knitting and Sewing.

Those "Arts and Crafts" are lifetime skills and activities that have stood me well!

So-o-o --- I put together this Collection of Hand-crafted Items in FABRICS and FIBERS to show off what the following ARTISANS are making --- and I think they would all make wonderful Gifts!

Back To School from "The Handmade Place"

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs on ARTFIRE and ETSY

LAPTOP SLEEVE CASE - PROTECTIVE, THICK, SOFT - HAND-KNITTED

BACK TO SCHOOL!!

I remember when I was growing up - there were 2 main shopping times then --  when I was preparing for the new school year -- and the Year-End Sales in Downtown Chicago (I blogged about this in another post last Year-End!).

When I was old enough to do some kind of work to make some extra money - Baby Sitting, then a part-time job - these were the times when I usually spent my hard-earned $$$!!

Kids didn't have their own Computers then -- in fact the only Computers I ever knew about when I was growing up were the ones being worked on by the Computer Science guys at the U of I, where I went to College.

But now Computers are an every-day thing for most people!!!

And it is quite common for Kids of All Ages to Have some kind of Notebook, Laptop or IPad.

Adults, too (LOL)!!

It was with all of these (and myself) that I put together and Hand-Knitted the LAPTOP SLEEVE or CASE pictured above!!

I have made several of them --
-- this one is a "BLUE TWEED"!

The "BLUE TWEED" is created by Knitting with 2 strands of yarn held together - one a Variegated and one a Solid yarn -- Well, you can see the result above in the photo.

I made  one for myself years ago -- it is shown in the pictures in the Artfire listing for this - I'm still using it -- and I love it, so I thought others might.

Did Sell One 2 years ago at this time!!!

Knitted very thick - it is very protective - with your LAPTOP or NOTEBOOK or IPAD in one of these SLEEVES or CASES - however you are carrying it around, it will not get scratched or banged up - in fact, you can also put all kinds of papers, notes, etc. in the bag with it.

Very practical -- kind of fun -- and Decorative!!

I think it is a Really Good Accessory for a Student - so I put it in "The Handmade Place Back To School Handmade Creations" , pictured below (though my LAPTOP SLEEVE was too  far down to get in this Screen Print)!

(By the Way - I have all kinds of Yarn and I can make this another Color Theme for you, if you want it!)

Moving into FALL or AUTUMN Designs for 2010

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - Internet Shop of Handmade Items In Fibers

I'm doing something a little new this year in Fall or Autumn or Harvest designs.

I've been reading about Color Trends for 2010 (both in Fashion and Home Decorating), because I like to work in Color!!

Now you have your Classic ones - mostly from Nature - Copper Reds, Oranges, Goldish Yellows, Browns and Beiges -- just think of the trees turning in the Fall and that is what you would most likely think of these Classic Fall or Autumn coloring!!

I have been doing my Fall Designs In Fiber in these colors for years now - and some have been rather popular -- one year I had a rather large Custom Order for a bunch of my Maple Leaves in different colors!!

See this blog article from last year in the Fall, with a video!!
http://rssdesignsinfiber.blogspot.com/2009/11/fall-decorating-what-i-have-to-offer.html

But I have decided to step out a bit from the classic - this year, Turquoise is supposed to be "The Color of the Year"!! So colors in that family are showing up in different season's palettes.

See this article from "Handmade Spark" with the Fall 2010 Colors per pantone - the color "Lagoon" is the color in the Turquoise family in this palette.

And in this article from Design Style Guide, "Turquoise Inspiration 2", different shades of Turquoise is shown in Home Decor.

So, I am working on some new items with shades of Turquoise in it -- my newest has Yellows in a design with Turquoise, including some textured Irish Crochet Leaves in a Sunset Ombre thread - got the Fall Leaves in there.

Another with an Aquamarine, Gray-Beige and Beige Rose (almost like the 'Living Coral' shown in the Handmade Spark article)!

Another in Blue/Green/Beige -- and maybe some Reddish Coppery Maple Leaves!!

-- And like in my earlier post -- more Classic in Sunset Ombre and Fudge Brown!!

Fall /Autumn / Harvest Season is one of my favorites for Color!!

So, keep an eye out for what shows up here!!

ECO LAPTOP SOCK -- A New Form of Handmade Reusable Bag I Made

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - Internet Shop of Handmade Items In Fibers

I got a Laptop for myself a few months back and decided that I wanted something to protect it and cushion and "hide" it.

I had heard of Laptop Socks or Sleeves -- and I decided to make myself one in yarn.

It was my first and an experiment and totally my own design.

To make it thick, I knitted in Garter Stitch with double-strand yarn -- and I made it to fit my laptop exactly. I finished off the edges with a nice crocheted crab stitch!! Took a while to make because I did it in my spare time, as it was for myself, but I made sure I got it made for when I was going to be away for a couple days and was taking my laptop with me, as I wanted it to have something to protect it while traveling.

I got it done and it fit fine and did all I wanted it to (cushion and protect and hide)!

Then I realized I needed something to put the cords and all in -- so I made what I call a matching Gadget Bag.

Now, it was time to see about making one to sell.

I decided I wanted it to be ECO in design, materials and subject or theme. So I decided to make the outside or back of it a knitted tapestry of a tree - dark green on light green. Then in choosing the yarn, I wanted something soft and ECO, so I chose Caron Simply Soft ECO, which is partially made of recycled plastic bottles. I already had the design of the tree charted and just needed to modify it to fit this pattern.

So now weeks later -- I have it done (with its own Gadget Bag) and listed on Etsy: my ECO Tree Tapestry Laptop Sock!!

Have to see how this does on Etsy -- there are others made by others, but I this is totally my own design and I think a bit unique!!

Would you like one? I have lots of different yarns I can do it in!!

World Wide Knit (Crochet) In Public Day(s)

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - Internet Shop of Handmade Items In Fibers

Personally, I actually think it is funny that there is a "World Wide Knit (Crochet) In Public Day" -- or Days, as it turns out!!

I periodically do it all the time -- though not at events with others -- just on my own as I go around shopping or traveling or going to the doctor!!

But I think having a Day for celebrating it is a great idea for promoting the arts of Needlework!!

  • Saturday, June 13th, 2009 and Sunday, June 14th, 2009 (2nd weekend of June)

  • Saturday, June 20th, 2009 and Sunday, June 21st, 2009 (3rd weekend of June)

Today ( a Wednesday) is right in the middle of the 2 weekends -- and according to the official website, in future years, it will be on the 3rd weekend of June, so it does not conflict with other Needle Arts events going on around the world.

Well, in my little rural town in the east Antelope Valley of Southern California, I did not know anyone else doing it (to organize an event), so I just went out to my local restaurant and had lunch and crocheted on this bag I am making for myself - in public.

But the people at the restaurant might not realize that I was there purposely because it was "World Wide Knit(Crochet) In Public Day"!!

You see -- almost every time I go there (which is once in a while) -- I have with me one of my crochet projects, which I pull out and work on while I am waiting for my order!!

I sometimes have knitting with me instead of crochet, but people worry a little bit about knitting needles in public these days because they are so long and sharp, so I usually have some form of crochet with me whenever I go out!

There is a whole list of public places I crochet at:

  • all kinds of restaurants

  • parks

  • bus stops

  • train stations

  • trains

  • doctor's offices (all that waiting, you know!)

  • hospital cafeterias

  • plazas.

It is a great way to keep yourself occupied -- and from going "stir-crazy" with all the waiting!!

Taking the Metrolink train from the Antelope Valley to Los Angeles -- or vice versa -- I have gotten quite a bit of crochet done on that not-so-short trip!!

I think this coming weekend I'll celebrate it again - just for the fun of it - maybe head over the the local town park and crochet some at a table under the trees!!
