Newest Crochet Lace - Yellow Star Crochet Lace Earrings - plus other Crochet Jewelry by RSS Designs In Fiber

Yellow Star Dangle Crochet Lace Earrings - Handmade by RSS Designs In Fiber

These are the Newest line of Crochet Lace items I decided to make and sell online - Crochet Lace Dangle Earrings - Handmade By RSS Designs In Fiber - these are a Yellow Star In A Circle Dangles - 3 1/2 Inches in Diameter, which is considered "Extra Large" or "Jumbo" for Earring Dangles.

These are basically a Crochet Lace Round in a certain pattern - the type of which I make all the time - but for Earrings, they are tightly stitched and then starched to stay in shape when attached to Earring Wires.

I had gotten some instructions/patterns for making Crochet Jewelry - mostly Chokers or Necklaces or Earrings - with Beads and I made one Choker with Wood Beads some time back:

Wood Bead Choker Necklace - Handmade by RSS Designs In Fiber

But I decided to do more - in more colors and designs - and I have made a little bit of headway - and my first newer project was this longer Beaded Pendant Necklace with Matching Earrings in Aqua.

Aqua Beaded Necklace with Flower Pendant and Matching Earrings - Handmade By RSS Designs In Fiber

The Aqua Beads and the Pendant are actually crocheted onto the crochet thread strands, that are crocheted in a design by Maggie Petsch Chasalow that I like, though I adapt it to my idea of what to make!

Then I had the idea to take one of my Wood Hoop projects with a Filet Crochet design inside it of a "Bird of Peace" (Dove with Olive Branch) - and make it a short Necklace/Choker:

Bird of Peace Pendant Necklace - Handmade By RSS Designs In Fiber

I really enjoy crocheting with  Crochet Threads - which these are all crocheted with!  Making a Necklace / Choker / Earring Strand with Crochet Threads (sometimes doubled up) makes for a very lightweight Jewelry piece.  I use very strong crochet threads, which hold up well - and are washable and colorfast!

I have a Pinterest Board for My Handmade Jewelry - you can follow it on Pinterest for any new pieces I add to it - or follow me on Etsy, which is where I put the Crochet Jewelry I make!

A One-Man Acoutsic Guitar Act at the 2017 "Malibu Guitar Festival" - Tommy Emmanuel

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber

Well, I have a huge appreciation for One-Man Acoustic Guitar Acts -- and when I saw a Poster from the 2017 "Malibu Guitar Festival" and saw Tommy Emmanuel's name on the list of Guitarists playing, I thought, "Hm-m-m - maybe this is real music!"

Who is Tommy Emmanuel and why did his name on the list of Guitarists draw my attention?

I first heard of Tommy Emmanuel from an old friend from my University of Illinois College Coffee House Days, Musician and Producer Pete Berkow, who I did a blog feature on - and Pete gave me a video of Tommy Emmanuel that he had produced some time back.  Well, Pete knows that I appreciate Acoustic Guitar playing from our College Days -- and I am glad to see that others do, too!

I immediately enjoyed Tommy Emmanuel's playing!!!

Tommy Emmanuel was one of the Musicians included the the Music Gone Public PBS series that Pete Berkow Produced with Michael Hoopingarner - and here is the video of Tommy Emmanuel from his Music Gone Public Episode:

Tommy Emmanuel is really a One-Man Act - and he can really, really play that Guitar!!!

I love it!

I also found this TEDx Talks Video of  Tommy Emmanuel -- "My Life As A One-Man Band" --

I think the Music speaks for itself!

(Yes - I go out to Malibu once in a while from the Antelope Valley -- out by Pacific Coast Highway and Trancas Canyon and Zuma Beach - love the Ocean Air all year long in all weathers, LOL!!!  --  But not usually for Music Festivals, LOL!)

A Delightful Few Hours with Art - and Nature - At The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena

I like the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA - it has a nice collection of Art by Artists that I particularly like - and now they have a special Exhibit of Van Gogh's "Bedroom" Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago - and I had to go! ....  Yes, I blogged in 2013 about going to the Art Institute of Chicago when I was growing up there - and over the years, I saw a number of the Van Gogh Paintings they have - including this Van Gogh "Bedroom" Painting now on Exhibit at the Norton Simon Museum. .... It was time to go again to the Norton Simon Museum!

Here is a Video from the Art Institute of Chicago about the Van Gogh "Bedroom" Painting in their Collection.

Seeing the Van Gogh "Bedroom" Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago - and getting up close enough to see the brush strokes - was really wonderful!!!  I loved it - along with the other Van Gogh Paintings they have!!  My other favorites of Van Gogh there are "The Mulberry Tree" and "Portrait of A Peasant" - I just love the colors - these two Paintings and the "Bedroom" Painting are particularly vibrant!

Though I like quite a number of Painters, that I have been exposed to since I was a little girl - the Impressionists, Late-Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists have been my favorites since then - especially the Landscape, and some of the Portrait and Still Life Paintings.

But my favorite of all time is still Van Gogh.

But I also had a delightful time seeing some of the other Artists on Exhibit at the Norton Simon Museum as well:
Degas - Paintings
Degas - Bronze Sculptures
Matisse - Painting
Monet - Paintings
Pissarro - Paintings
Renoir - Paintings
Seurat - Paintings

-- And the walk in the Sculpture Garden was really, really nice - I particularly enjoyed the Ficus Tree, which is really huge!!

I have my own Art Books - several on Van Gogh, one on Renoir, one on Monet - one on Impressionism - one on Georgia O'Keeffe - Art Books from my Mother Judy, including some from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York -- and I have some Museum Studies from the Art Institute of Chicago - and Photography Books - and Fiber Art Books - and some biographies.  I just love Art!!

I really liked the Renior Painting I linked to above - the "At Renoir's Home, rue St. Georges" -- I thought it was really funny - as one of the Impressionist Painters I really like, Camille Pissarro, is in it!!

One of the other things I really enjoyed at the Norton Simon was this letter written by Van Gogh to his friends, the Ginoux Family, on display.  I read the translation - and got a souvenir of it.  I also have the book, "Dear Theo" edited by Irving Stone (Van Gogh's letters to his brother, Theo) - reading some of those letters gives one an insight into the actual person, Vincent Van Gogh.

The Van Gogh "Bedroom" Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago is at the Norton Simon Museum only through March 6, 2017.

You can always go to Chicago and go to the Art Institute of Chicago ... Ha!

But I thought I would also share this other video from the Art Institute of Chicago, "Under Cover:  The Science of Van Gogh's Bedrooms" - which I found really interesting - but then I find color science fascinating!!

My Newest Crochet Coaster Creation - And It's In On Fire For Handmade "Great Handmade Finds" Today!

Photo in On Fire For Handmade - Brown n Blue Handmade Finds - 2017-02-26 - Original Product Photo by Ruth Sandra Sperling of RSS Designs In Fiber

In doing my Handmade, I like to try different Stitch Patterns and different ideas.

This is the first time I did the Crochet Spike Stitch in a Square.

I think the color combination of Darker Chocolate Brown and a Light Powder Blue is a great contrasting color theme.

Brown is a "composite color" or "tertiary color" and especially the Dark is a "Low Intensity" mix of Red, Yellow - and Black.

The combinations of Red and Yellow in it put it on the opposite side of the "Color Wheel" from Light Blue - meaning that "Chocolate Brown and Powder Blue" are a complementary, contrasting color theme -- and I love to work in such color themes!!!

I'd been looking at this Spike Stitch Square pattern for some time to make something - and I thought this was a good opportunity to do it!!  It is on Etsy.

More Clean Energy - Solar and Wind, Leave Tar Sands in The Ground and No Tar Sands Pipelines

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber

Southern Antelope Valley High Desert to the San Gabriel Mountains by Ruth Sandra Sperling, Photographer

Anyone who has read much of what I have written publicly has come across my writings about my Love of Nature and my concern about this planet, Earth, which is the foundation of writing this blog post.

I am really, really, really concerned about the development of the Tar Sands Oil in Canada and I have been reading about it on and off for years ... and with recent events I went back to reading about it - including some Science articles, all of which I will link to at the end.

Personally, after reading multiple articles from the NRDC to Scientific American to the National  Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicines - and information concerning the Ogallala Acquifer - I am firmly and irrevocably opposed to such pipelines as the Keystone XL (Tar Sands) and the Dakota Access (Fracked Oil).

I am on the email list for 350.org - and I would like to  quote from an email I got from Duncan Meisel  at 350.org on Jan. 25th, 2017 (along with a lot of other people on their email list), because of the truths in it, which I think everyone should know!

Quote:

Here's what you need to know about Trump's actions on Tuesday:
  • He did *not* approve Keystone XL or Dakota Access. He briefly succeeded in confusing a lot of people on this point (including me, I will admit).
  • On Dakota Access, he told the Army Corps of Engineers that the pipeline is in our "national interest" and told them to "consider" revoking the environmental review placed on it by the Obama Administration.
  • On Keystone XL, he invited TransCanada to re-apply and if they do, mandated a final decision on the pipeline within 60 days and waived input from environmental agencies.
  • And when TransCanada does re-apply, they no longer have permits in Nebraska, and their permits in South Dakota are being challenged.
  • Trump also placed conditions on approval of the pipelines -- like limiting oil exports, and determining where the steel comes from -- that the oil companies might not accept.

I also think people should speak up, which is why I am writing this blog post.

I also, based on years of experiences, am firmly aware that there will be differences between people.

I am actually opposed not only to the "Tar Sands Pipelines" - you see, based on the facts I have read about the Extraction of Tar Sands and the Risks of doing it including, it looks like to me, huge destruction to an Ecologically Significant Boreal Forest Ecosystem in Canada - as well as disruption of critical carbon reservoirs and release of all kinds of greenhouse emissions in developing oil from the tar sands -- I think, in terms of  both short term and long term evaluation, it would be much better to just leave the Tar Sands in the forest!!!

And I read several different references concerning the Risks of Tar Sands Pipeline and their leaking, which is very likely apparently as every one built and put into service to this date seems to have leaks and accidents in excess of what the company running them estimates.

I am familiar with the Kalamazoo River area in Michigan where the 2010 Tar Sands Oil Spill occurred - and was horrified about it.

How many Tar Sands Oil Spills, which are poisonous, can we endure???

Also - both the Keystone XL Pipeline and Dakota Access Pipeline go through areas over the Ogallala Acquifer - a huge source of water for our USA High Plains - and even though there are differing opinions on how Oil Pipeline leaks might get into and pollute the Ogallala Acquifer and how much of it would be affected - I sincerely doubt we should take the risk.  Remember ---
"Once depleted, the aquifer will take over 6,000 years to replenish naturally through rainfall" --- Quote from:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogallala_Aquifer

So -- lets encourage growth of Solar and Wind as Energy Sources.

Lets leave the Tar Sands in Canada in the ground and stop destruction to Canada's Boreal Forest -- and no more Tar Sands Pipelines - especially like the Keystone XL - or Fracked Oil Pipelines like the Dakota Access - running through the Heartland of the USA.
