Photo in On Fire For Handmade - Brown n Blue Handmade Finds - 2017-02-26 - Original Product Photo by Ruth Sandra Sperling of RSS Designs In Fiber

In doing my Handmade, I like to try different Stitch Patterns and different ideas.

This is the first time I did the Crochet Spike Stitch in a Square.

I think the color combination of Darker Chocolate Brown and a Light Powder Blue is a great contrasting color theme.

Brown is a "composite color" or "tertiary color" and especially the Dark is a "Low Intensity" mix of Red, Yellow - and Black.

The combinations of Red and Yellow in it put it on the opposite side of the "Color Wheel" from Light Blue - meaning that "Chocolate Brown and Powder Blue" are a complementary, contrasting color theme -- and I love to work in such color themes!!!

I'd been looking at this Spike Stitch Square pattern for some time to make something - and I thought this was a good opportunity to do it!!  It is on Etsy.

Brand New Creation - A Wrist Cuff That Hugs Your Wrist! - New Personal Accessory

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber
 - Get My Handmade in my Bonanza Booth or my Etsy Shop -- or Privately

Sometimes - in my own world of doing Handmade - I come up with something to solve a problem - and this Brand New Wrist Cuff That Hugs Your Wrist is just that!!

This one is in Shaded Denim Blues - as it really is in the shade of Blue, "Denim", I thought that in this world of "Jeans-wearing people all over the place", it might appeal to someone!

I designed it to Hug and Cushion the Wrist while on a Computer - or using a Mouse - Huh - Like other blogging, online roaming  people like me, LOL!!

I had to figure it out, but having been crocheting all kinds of things (many of which have never seen the light of online at all) in many different types of stitches, I figured it all out and it worked on the first try! (Yes I'm wearing the one I made for  myself as I type this!)

I used 2 types of Crocheted Rib Stitches - to explain - these are Crochet Stitch Patterns that create Ribs - you know those Ribbed bottoms of Sweaters or at the ends of Sweater Arms - that STRETCH - you see - STRETCH is the key word here!

I needed something that would Cover the Wrist area - sort of Fit and Hug it, but not wanting to have to attach some fastener - it had to be able to Stretch over the Wider Part of the Hand to put it on - and still "Hug The Wrist"!

The Section that "Hugs The Wrist" is Crocheted with "Post Stitch Rib", which is really rather thick and CUSHIONING (another key word) - and here is a Closeup picture that shows the detail of the Post Stitch Rib Section of this Wrist Cuff:

Then -- since I wanted the Top of the Cuff to be wider to accommodate easy movement with the Hand and still fit comfortable - I did this upper part (see it in the pictures at  the top) with a Back Loop Single Crochet Rib Stitch, which is a little more flexible and Stretch-y.

Well - some experienced Crocheters will know what I mean - and it all worked out.

It is crocheted in one of my favorite Cotton Yarns - Peaches and Creme, which I have in quite a few colors.

These are Real Casual - designed for Everyday Use - that you can slip in a pocket, case, purse, desk drawer - and then just pull out and pop on - definitely convenience in mind ( I get impatient sometimes, do you?)!

Available in my On Fire For Handmade Gift Guide Shop at:

Shaded Denim Blue Wrist Cuff - Protective - Handmade Casual Stretch-y Ribbed Cotton Yarn Hugs Wrist

-- And I've thought some people might want some in other Colors (who knows?) - I can make one of these in all kinds of Colors - I have this cotton yarn in quite a number of Colors - practically the whole Color spectrum - just Email Me to request a Custom one made in the Color you want - and tell me the Size you need!!

Holiday Red Flower Thread Crochet Centerpiece Completed to 21 Inches!

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs on ARTFIRE and ETSY

Holiday Red Flower Thread Crochet Centerpiece

Well - it has been a bit of a project for me - I originally blogged about my project to "Make It Bigger" - I took a finely crocheted 12 Inch piece, tripled the number of flowers in it and added more outer rounds - with a finished piece of 21 Inches in diameter!!

Made 100% with lustrous DMC Pearl Cotton Thread - and I used very fine Size 12 Pearl Cotton - with a small steel crochet hook to get a finely detailed, tightly crocheted piece with rounds arranged in contrasting colors, as well as different stitches, to bring out a beautiful design!!

I did complete the ring of 32 flowers on the outer ring (which I had added and figured out) - bringing the total number of flowers in this piece to 48!

With other Handmade projects to do - and I always have more ideas or designs or projects in my head than I have time for it seems - and complete - it has been a bit of a journey to complete this and get it up for all to see!

I love the way the design is with different rounds - or sections of rounds - in the contrasting Red, Green and White!

Enjoy!!

New Design for Handmade Hanging Pot Holder - with Tunisian Crochet

Kitchen Hanging Potholders in Berry Colors

I learned how to do the Basic Tunisian Crochet - and when I did it with an Ombre (or Variegated) Yarn, I found out the beautiful look that resulted - Abstract, but I loved it!

So-o-o, I decided to use it to make some Centers for Pot Holders and other Decor - and the set above was my first project that I did and listed online.

Below is a Closeup of the Tunisian Crochet Center for the Pot Holder on the right in the Above Photo!

Closeup of Tunisian Crochet Center for Hanging Pot Holder in Berry Colors
Around the Tunisian Crochet Center are rounds in Colors that fit:  Mauve Purple and the Winterberry Ombre and White.

Tunisian Crochet Basic, done tightly, with an Afghan Crochet Hook that makes tight stitches with the Yarn or Thread you are working with, results in a rather dense, tight Solid Fabric.  I crocheted it that way intentionally - I wanted a Tight, Dense fabric that would result in a fabric thick enough to be Protective for picking up Hot Pots or Dishes!

I moved on to my next project using Tunisian Crochet to make Pot Holders with a Yarn in different shades of one Color - Yellow - mixed in with White -- it is called "Daisy Ombre" by Peaches and Creme (though it is a discontinued Color now).

Yellow Hanging Pot Holder Set with Tunisian Crochet Center

It is a little different with this kind of Colored Ombre Yarn, as the Colors are really Analogous, making a more Monochromatic Color Theme - but enough of a difference from the White to the Darker Yellow to create a design.  I really like this one, too!

Here is the Closeup of the Tunisian Crochet Center for this Pot Holder design:

Closeup of Tunisian Crochet Center of Yellow Daisy Ombre Yarn Hanging Pot Holder

I thought that these Yellow "Daisy Ombre" Pot Holders would fit well in a Kitchen where Yellow is either a Main Color in the decorating theme - or an Accent Color.  From what I have heard from different people - Yellow is often a color in Kitchens (I think)!

A New Crochet Technique incorporated into making my Handmade Decor to add more variety to what I make - I like the "Abstract Design" that results!

There is one thing, though - Tunisian Crochet does not look the same on the back - so I've included a picture below of the BACK of the Yellow Daisy Ombre Pot Holders - the back of the Closeup above, so you can see how it looks - which I also like!

Finding Artistic Handmade Jewelry - Part 1 -- Hand - Designed Necklaces, Bracelets, Earrings

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs on ARTFIRE

ARTISTIC HANDMADE JEWELRY??? ~~~ What is it anyway? ~~~  I've been inter-acting with other Handmade Artisans online for some years now -- including those who make different kinds of Jewelry.

Some make the Beads or Pendants themselves and sell them individually or incorporate what they make into complete Jewelry pieces -- some are Designers who have truly made an Art of combining different components in Multi-Color Designs!!

I'm starting in Part 1 of a 3-Part Series with Featuring 5 pieces of what I see as rather Special, Artistic Jewelry that are Hand-Designed with Care, Thought - and for most of these Artisans - some kind of Creative "Process"!!

Tree of Life Pendant Necklace Handmade Rustic Magnesite Gemstones OOAK
Handmade Necklace by Shadow Dog Designs with Tree of Life Pendant

"Shadow Dog Designs" is Catherine Waterhouse - she has her own way of putting together her Handmade pieces of Jewelry - and here is her own words on it:

How do I design jewelry? I get asked that all the time and usually I say "I don't really know".  That's not a flip answer because it's mostly true.  Sometimes, very rarely, I "see" a design in my head; in that case, the jewelry designs itself.  Most of the time I have to play with gemstones, color combinations and textures until the design feels right. Sometimes I have to walk away from a design and let it set for hours, days or even weeks. And sometimes, nothing works and the elements are put away for another day.  For the ARBOL DE LA VIDA necklace, I knew I wanted to keep the design on the rustic side to mimic the gorgeous ancient look to the Gabriel Polymer Clay Tree Pendant.  Over the course of 1-2 weeks, I tried many different strands of gemstones from my stash and nothing worked.  It wasn't until I made a trip to my favorite bead store in Las Cruces, NM, that I found the perfect strand: Earthy Turquoise Magnesite Discs that mimicked the circular bits around the tree and tied into the color of the handmade pendant perfectly. Each disc in the necklace was picked individually to complement its neighbor and provide an interesting flow of color and texture.  I can't tell you how many times, I took off and rearranged the discs until it was right.  Brass Beads Antiqued to a dark color were chosen, once again, to mimic the round bits of the pendant and to provide fluidity to the necklace.  A hand cast bronze toggle clasp from a wonderful artist in Arizona was used to finish the necklace - it was chosen because the pattern reminded me of tree bark.  I absolutely love the ARBOL DE LA VIDA necklace and hope it finds a good forever home that appreciates all the time, energy and positive mojo that went into its creation!!!

Summertime Blues Handmade Adjustable Bracelet
Summertime Blues Handmade Adjustable Bracelet by JNL Designs

Linda of "JNL Designs" designed this Gorgeous Charm Bracelet!  Here, in her own words Quoted from the Artfire Listing, shows how she put it together!

Under "Inspiration" -- I designed this gorgeous around the focal point. I saw this slider and fell in love with it. My imagination ran away from me and started designing this beautiful bracelet. I love blues and turquoise as a color scheme.

Under "Description" -- Antique silver plated flower slider..which I used as the focal (it has turquoise color within). ----- All of the beads have been hand wired wrapped and the attached to the chain for more security. The chain is silver plated and I have attached a lobster clasp so that you may attach it to a link to fit your wrist. At the other end of the chain I have attached to beads to dangle off the chain. A great gift for a March birthday or for someone who loves Spring and Summer with all the luscious colors of these Seasons.

Dumortierite Gemstone Copper and Czech Glass Necklace
Dumotierite Gemstone - Copper - and Czech Glass Handmade Necklace by Solana Kai Designs
Barbara  of "Solana Kai Designs" Hand-designed this Necklace when she found the beautiful Copper Beads and Bead Caps - here is how in her own words:

I began stringing “love beads” as a teenager, but didn't take up jewelry making in earnest until many years later.  Most of my knowledge has been acquired slowly and organically, by reading through bead magazines and books, learning from peers with particular expertise, and a good amount of trial and error.  At the moment, I'm taking a metalwork class, which is proving to be very inspirational.
Typically, the way I create is to start by finding one particular bead or focal pendant that catches my fancy.  Next, l explore my “stash” to see what options I have that will best compliment the initial ingredient.  If all of the right pieces can't be found at home, I'll wait until the missing piece presents itself.  I often start out with one intention, only to find that serendipity is at work!  In the case of this necklace, I was at a gem fair and
fell in love with the copper beads and bead caps.  That sent me searching for the perfect accompaniments and voila!  I found these gorgeous deep blue Dumortierite gemstones and Marea AB finish faceted Czech glass beads, all of which complimented each other and brought out the best of each element!

Peruvian Pendant,Turquoise,Agate,Jasper,African SandBead Necklace
Handmade Necklace by Specialtivity - Peruvian Pendant with Turquoise - Agate - Jasper

Kathy of "Specialtivity" puts her Heart and Soul into each piece of Wearable ART she makes - in her own words:

My creative process for creating my wearable art usually starts with some sort of inspiration whether it's from the beautiful gemstones and beads in my stash or a dream (yes I actually dream about designing jewelry) :) .  Sometimes I will draw out a plan on my sketch pad of how I would like the piece to look, other times I just start with something that catches my eye as in this Peruvian pendant necklace and let my creative juices flow.  I knew when I purchased the Peruvian bead that I wanted it to be the focal of the creation.  I look at the colours that will be involved and start to pull out beads or gemstones that I think would compliment the piece either texturally or visually or both. Mixing mediums is always a thrill for me, I don't think that a piece necessarily has to be composed of all gold, silver, bronze etc. although of course I think either one of these are beautiful but I also like to mix it up, adding another visual appeal to the creation.  All in all in creating a piece of wearable ART I really do put my heart and soul into each piece.

Lyre Harp In A Hoop Earrings Unusual Music Themed Jewelry
Lyre Harp In A Hoop Handmade Earrings by The Singing Beader

Connie of "The Singing Beader" is a Singer who makes Jewelry - And who decided to make Music-themed Jewelry - says:

When I started selling my handmade jewelry, I didn't offer any music themed items. Most of my designs were wire beaded with gemstones and crystals. At that time, I was also a karaoke singer and recording enthusiast. My passion for both singing and beading was the reason I named my business, “The Singing Beader”. With that name, it just made sense to start creating music themed jewelry, and I have been doing so for about three years. I am always thinking of new creations I can make to add to my ArtFire shop section, “Musical Instruments, etc.”. Many of the designs are unique like the “Lyre Harp in a Hoop Earrings” or the “Gold and Blue Beaded Harmonica Necklace”. One of my favorite music themed necklaces is the “Abalone Mother of Pearl Shell Guitar Pendant Necklace”. As with most handmade jewelry, these are one of a kind designs, with only one for sale.

SO-O-O, When you are looking for a piece of Jewelry that is:

-- in certain Colors --
-- from a certain Culture --

Looking For More Creativity In Gifts For Mother's Day

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs on ARTFIRE

Lovebird In Heart

Creativity for Mother's Day!

I've joined together with a number of others who sell on online venues such as Artfire.com and Etsy and Zibbet - many of us sell our own HANDMADE that we make or design with our own hands, though others sell Vintage and Antique - or Supplies - or Commercial.

But one thing we all have in common is that we have relatively small businesses - and from the interaction I've had with these sellers - we all genuinely Care about what we sell and about our Customers.

If you buy from us - you may get something Distinctive - nothing like the mass-produced items in commercial stores - and you might get something truly One-Of-A-Kind!

I'm not only joining in - I put it on my own blog here:

Each week through this time, it starts with a Blog Hop created by Julie Cleveland of Blue Morning Expressions - links to listings are added by each individual - and some of us, like me, share the whole set of links by doing the Blog Hop, as well as sharing around the Internet - like I have in the PINTEREST Board I set up for this!!

I strongly urge readers of my blogs to take a look and see what we have to share!!

The photos in this post are my 3 Handmade items that I link to in this week's Blog Hop - to give you an idea of what I have to offer that some Mother might like!!!

My Shamrocks Nature Crochet Art Doily in Handmade Great Finds

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs

Shamrocks 3-Leaf Clovers with Yellow Flowers Nature Art Doily

I designed and crocheted the above Doily - I wanted to do something very specific - to do the popular Shamrock or 3-Leaf Clover Theme, but as they are in Nature.  I had a bunch of "Clover" or Shamrocks in the Garden out front - they had naturally spread and were making great ground cover I thought - especially as usually during the summer months, they had little Yellow Flowers all over them!!!

Most of us think of Shamrocks as 3-Leaf Clovers along with the more rare 4-Leaf Clover.

They are a symbol - mostly Irish and for St. Patrick's Day (I'm not Irish at all - just like some Irish culture).

BUT THEY ARE A REAL PLANT -- and I really like having them in my garden!!  Apparently, there were "... flowered CLOVERED plains ..." mentioned in early Irish literature - and I am not sure if it originally had anything to do with "St. Patrick" or any Saints, but beautiful Irish plains in Nature!!!

So I took crochet patterns for 3-Leaf Clovers and little multi-petal flowers -- and a design for a round crochet mat -- and put together this Crochet Art Doily!!!!

Here are photos of flowering clover from a front-yard garden I had ....

.... and a closeup of the center of my Handmade Thread Crochet

And .... On Fire For Handmade decided to include my Shamrock Nature Art Doily in it's "Kiss Me I'm Irish Great Finds" this week!  You can VOTE for it there if you like it!!!

With All White - It's the Design - and the Texture - including Beading

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs on Bonanza and Etsy and On Fire For Handmade Gift Guide

As many who have read here on my blog, I like to use Color in my Designs In Fiber - much of it over the year in Thread Crochet.

But ~~~ I have also done quite a bit of Thread Crochet in one Color - and most of that has been WHITE!

Certain patterns lend themselves to be done in one Color -- and a stark White against a dark background is very Dramatic!  So, in these cases, it is the design(s) or pattern(s) of a piece that is the deciding factor -- and the subject may determine whether it is done in stark CLASSIC WHITE - or the more "primitive" or "rustic" or "country" beiges.

The above video is of only ALL WHITE Thread Crochet pieces I have done myself.

In addition to the pattern - textured stitches and beads add emphasis to certain parts of the design.

In this first example of a Filet Crochet of a Cottontail Rabbit, I used Raised Single Crochet stitches around the shape of the Rabbit -- and Puff Stitches for the Cottontail:

White Cottontail Rabbit Coaster in Filet Crochet

Another Filet Crochet Doily - I call this "Romantic Couple" - it is a Silhouette of a Couple in a Dancing pose.  I added Silver Blending Filament to the Woman and Man figures in it for a little bit of sparkle!

Romantic Couple Doily - Wedding or Valentine Doily

In this Closeup of one point of a Large Snowflake, you can see the Design -- with small Glass Seed Beads on the point and the edge, which adds Texture and a light Sparkle to the piece:

Beaded White Snowflake

This is another example of a Beaded All White White Doily - with Crystal Beads around the Edge -

In this example, "Popcorn" Stitches are used to crochet the "Pineapple" - called "Popcorn Pineapples" - so here you have both Texture and a Distinctive Design:

Pure White Popcorn Pineapple Crocheted Lace Star Coaster

In this last specific example of a Thread Crochet White Irish Crochet Heart Trinket - White Glass Round Pearls are crocheted inside the center of a Crocheted Rose with 4 layers of 8 petals each - adding Sparkle and more Texture:

For Spring - Clovers (Shamrocks), Flowers, Animals

Ruth Sandra Sperling
RSS Designs In Fiber - My Handmade Designs on ARTFIRE

SPRING is just around the corner and I am glad -- though I appreciate all the Seasons, the cold of winter is always a little discouraging - even though here in the High Desert of Southern California it doesn't get as cold as in other places.  But it still gets below freezing and some plants don't grow then -- though my Rosemary plant (several years old now) is still blooming with the little light blue flowers like I crocheted in this small crochet design!!

Rosemary Bloom Coaster Doily - Floral Crocheted Lace

But today is the First Day of March and in a few days it will officially be Spring according to the calendar (though last June we still had a frost here - you go figure!) -- and I am looking forward to all the Spring Flowers and Growth - like the 3-Leaf Clovers I crocheted in these two pieces!

Bruges Crocheted Lace 3-Leaf Clover Oval - Lucky St. Pats Day Mat
3-LEAF CLOVERS INSIDE A BRUGES LACE OVAL

Round Doily Featuring 3-Leaf Clovers and Yellow Flowers

And then - there are these 4-Leaf Clover Coaster-Size Squares - the 4-Leaf Clovers are supposed to be LUCKY -- and really do exist, though rarely according to what I have read.

4-LEAF CLOVER SQUARE COASTER SET OF 2

--  And, FLOWERS -- I do a lot of them in my Designs In Fiber -- but here are two that are particularly for SPRING!

GARDEN HANGING - CELTIC WOVEN CROCHET FLOWERS

-- And, soon, we will have Baby Rabbits and other small wildlife (like California Ground Squirrels) running around the fields here in the High Desert - I see them all over - even in the cities - they are often either under bushes or running through them!

So-o-o -- Now you have seen my little "Gallery" of Designs In Fiber --My CELEBRATION OF SPRING this year -- but, as always, more DESIGNS INSPIRED BY NATURE will be showing up in my Shops and here on my Blog.  I have four FLOWER Projects and one BIRD Project that are "Works In Progress" (These are for SPRING and SUMMER) -but depending on what Custom Orders I get, I will get to them as I can!!

I always seem to have more "designs in my head" than I can get done each Season!
