Orange and Cream Potholder Set in Tunisian Crochet Tweed by Ruth Sandra Sperling - RSS Designs In Fiber

Update as of October 20, 2019:  The original Set of these Orange and Cream Potholders Sold, but they can be made again - see my "Made-To-Order" RSS Designs In Fiber Listing on Etsy for a Set of 2.  If you want more, email me for a Custom Order.

Anne Hopfer, who does these "Handmade Finds" on her website, "On Fire For Handmade" sometimes does them in certain color combinations and this time she chose the Complimentary Color Combination of "Orange and Blue", which are very well-known complementary colors!

~~ You can always Vote for "RSS Designs In Fiber" in the Poll in this Handmade Finds!! ~~

Though I did not have anything made in both Orange and Blue - I did have these Handmade Pot Holders in my Etsy Shop in an Orange Color theme - but this complementary color scheme idea gave me another idea! ----- Though I would usually think that these would fit in an Orange/Yellow/Fall Colors Kitchen theme - they would also fit nicely as a contrasting color in a Blue Kitchen theme - livening it up some!!

Though Tunisian or Afghan Crochet Tweed, which I crocheted the main center part of these Pot Holders with, is a standard-ly done stitch - this exact design - with the Border and Rounded Edge - crocheted in a Chunky Cotton yarn - is my own!

I've been making Pot Holders for my own Kitchen for some years now (LOL)!  So, I've been experimenting some with what I think is the best, most useful design.  For my own use - I rarely hang them up now, so I left the hanging loop off (though if I do a custom order, I can always add them on for someone).

And I crocheted these with a Chunky Cotton Yarn - making them extra-thick!  This Chunky Cotton Yarn is labelled "Double Worsted" - but in another color theme, if I only have it in regular worsted weight cotton yarn, I can just double up the worsted yarn to get the same thickness!

And I made these a generous size:  9 3/4 Inches Wide by 8 3/4 Inches High.

Therefore, overall they are very useful for handling hot dishes of all kinds - and they can also serve as a Hot Pad or Trivet on a Table or Counter!

The Photo above and the one below give you a closer look at how these are constructed - Tunisian or Afghan crochet come out a bit thick anyway - in Chunky Yarn, they are really thick - and I like that thickness for picking up Hot Casserole type Dishes out of an oven - or off the top of a stove!

Protective Laptop Sleeve in Earthy Colors - By Ruth Sandra Sperling - RSS Designs In Fiber

Well - It is "Back-To-School" time for the 2017-18 School Year!

And I can't help but think about how different some things are from when I went to school in the 1950's, 60's, 70's!

One of those "different things" is that most kids now have a Laptop that they take to classes with then - and it needs to be dragged around to different classes, as well as back and forth to school.

It was 10 or so years ago that I made my own Laptop Sleeve for my own Laptops - in Double Strand Worsted Yarns, so if I had it in a suitcase or rolling backpack - or just carrying it around with me - it would be cushioned and protected.  Still have it!!

This one pictured above, as in the On Fire For Handmade Great Finds, "School Daze Back To School" - (with a Closeup below) - is My Newest Laptop Sleeve that I made with Double Strand Worsted Yarn - and have for sale in my Etsy Shop.

This Laptop Sleeve is crocheted with "Afghan Crochet" in a Paddy Green Yarn and an Ombre Yarn to make a "Tweed" Pattern, as shown in the Closeup below.

Laptop Sleeve in Earthy Colors - Open with Laptop peaking out

In addition to my own Laptop Sleeve - which I always use to protect my Laptop whenever I take it off my Desk - I've made a few of these that I've Sold.

This is my newest one - I decided to make it in Earthy Greens, Browns and Tans - and do it in Tunisian Crochet Tweed using 2 acrylic yarns Double-Strand Thick:
  • Paddy Green
  • Amazon Ombre

Closeup of Laptop Sleeve showing the detail of the Tunisian Crochet Tweed in Paddy Green and Amazon Ombre.
It is rather Soft and Sponge-y - and I tightly joined all pieces together - and gave it a finished edge with the Rounded Crab Stitch.

The Back Piece is longer - extending over with a Flap that Buttons on the Front piece, as you can see here:

<---- Back of Laptop Sleeve with the Flap extended -------

-------->  Photo Below shows the Front of the Laptop Sleeve with the Flap folded over on the front and Buttoned shut.

I like these Crocheted (and Knitted ones like pictured at the Bottom) - Double Strand Thick - to make a Sleeve that really CUSHIONS the Laptop - so you don't have to worry when you take it out in a Knapsack or Briefcase or Carryon Luggage - or a Suitcase - because it is PROTECTED from scratches and anything knocking against it with this type of Sleeve!!

See the Listing for this Earthy Colors Protective Laptop Sleeve for Full Details!

It is 100% Handmade in Yarns (and Fully Washable) - even the Button is a Three-Color Crocheted Button - and the Yarn is sturdy - my own Laptop Sleeve pictured below that I made has lasted me for Years!

A Crocheted or Knitted Laptop Sleeve like this can be made in any variety of Worsted Yarn - Double Strand - and I will take Custom Orders for making them!

New Design for Handmade Hanging Pot Holder - with Tunisian Crochet

Kitchen Hanging Potholders in Berry Colors

I learned how to do the Basic Tunisian Crochet - and when I did it with an Ombre (or Variegated) Yarn, I found out the beautiful look that resulted - Abstract, but I loved it!

So-o-o, I decided to use it to make some Centers for Pot Holders and other Decor - and the set above was my first project that I did and listed online.

Below is a Closeup of the Tunisian Crochet Center for the Pot Holder on the right in the Above Photo!

Around the Tunisian Crochet Center are rounds in Colors that fit:  Mauve Purple and the Winterberry Ombre and White.

Tunisian Crochet Basic, done tightly, with an Afghan Crochet Hook that makes tight stitches with the Yarn or Thread you are working with, results in a rather dense, tight Solid Fabric.  I crocheted it that way intentionally - I wanted a Tight, Dense fabric that would result in a fabric thick enough to be Protective for picking up Hot Pots or Dishes!

I moved on to my next project using Tunisian Crochet to make Pot Holders with a Yarn in different shades of one Color - Yellow - mixed in with White -- it is called "Daisy Ombre" by Peaches and Creme (though it is a discontinued Color now).

Yellow Hanging Pot Holder Set with Tunisian Crochet Center

It is a little different with this kind of Colored Ombre Yarn, as the Colors are really Analogous, making a more Monochromatic Color Theme - but enough of a difference from the White to the Darker Yellow to create a design.  I really like this one, too!

Here is the Closeup of the Tunisian Crochet Center for this Pot Holder design:

I thought that these Yellow "Daisy Ombre" Pot Holders would fit well in a Kitchen where Yellow is either a Main Color in the decorating theme - or an Accent Color.  From what I have heard from different people - Yellow is often a color in Kitchens (I think)!

A New Crochet Technique incorporated into making my Handmade Decor to add more variety to what I make - I like the "Abstract Design" that results!

There is one thing, though - Tunisian Crochet does not look the same on the back - so I've included a picture below of the BACK of the Yellow Daisy Ombre Pot Holders - the back of the Closeup above, so you can see how it looks - which I also like!
